Brinksway Air Raid Shelters 25th June 2008

Built in 1938 by Stockport’s Air Raid Precautions Committe as Britain prepared for the second world war, they were chipped out of the natural sandstone in the area in order to provide basic shelter, toilets and sleeping arrangements for the people of stockport during prolonged bombing.

The Shelters go on forever, it’s very easy to get lost down there. The air is close and the sandstone walls brush away with a simple touch.

Brinksway is much less preserved than the nearby Dodge Hill beds no longer remain in tact due to vandalism.

The Gripper Drain

The Gripper is a plesant mini drain to explore, I left my waders in the car as it had sides to it. Unfortunately there’s a good reason it was coined the gripper and I ended up turning a corner and getting my shoes and feet wet as the water (over 2 feet deep and flowing at roughly 3 feet per second) rushes over the edge and onto the walkway, at this point the walkway was getting very deep so shoes and cameras were left close to the entrance and continued barefoot!

St. Joesph’s Orphanage 12th June 2008

St. Joesph’s, a grade II listed building, originally an orphanage and later converted in parts to a hospital is brimming with medical equipment and the electricity was still on, so it was very cool to be in one of the operating rooms with the huge lights switch on (momentarily, don’t want to run up a bill for someone!)
